What a beautiful day for a horse show! 🐎 Yesterday the Manes for Movement Show Team had the opportunity to showcase their skills at the first PEC show of the season, under the direction and guidance of our Program Director and Adaptive Riding Instructor Niki MacLeod. A huge thank you to the Peninsula Equestrian Circuit for putting on such a wonderful and INCLUSIVE show! Our riders had a blast, and are looking forward to the next opportunity to participate 🐎

April is Occupational Therapy Month! In order to celebrate the profession and our recent expansion to include occupational therapy services at Manes for Movement, we will be posting throughout the month to highlight some of the ways we can work on unique occupations in our special barn environment 🐴

What is occupational therapy? Occupational therapy is the only profession that helps people across the lifespan to do the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of daily activities (occupations). Occupational Therapists (OTs) commonly work on fine motor skills, dressing, feeding, self-care, handwriting, self-regulation, sensory processing, play, executive functioning, motor planning, social skills and more!

Here at Manes for Movement, our occupational therapist can utilize the movement of the horse to support postural development, sensory processing, social engagement and beyond. Off the horse, our barn has many activities that require fine motor precision, sequencing, and sensory processing, such as making (and of course, feeding) horse cookies or keeping our horses clean. Our patients are always so excited to participate in these ground-based therapeutic activities, and our horses love it too! Swipe to see some of the tools we may use during our session to work on grooming and meal preparation πŸͺπŸ‘©β€πŸ³πŸ§Ό

Stay tuned for more OT posts this month, and contact us if you’re interested in learning more about OT at Manes for Movement!

What is Occupational Therapy? Occupational therapy is the only profession that helps people across the lifespan to do the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of daily activities (occupations). Occupational Therapists (OTs) commonly work on fine motor skills, dressing, feeding, self-care, handwriting, self-regulation, sensory processing, executive functioning, motor planning, social skills and more! Occupational therapy practitioners have a holistic perspective, in which the focus is on adapting the environment and/or task to fit the person, and the person is an integral part of the therapy team.

At Manes for Movement our OT uses the movement of the horse in her treatment sessions to facilitate sensory processing, strengthen core musculature to facilitate fine motor skills, to assist with self regulation, and much more to help our clients meet their functional goals!
